A Victorian regionally-based artist, Helen Lehmann's thematic concerns inherent to her art practice have mostly centred on the female image, manipulating its representation in the popular media and,more specifically, the fashion industry. Her exhibitions have explored ideas of desire, conformity and the symbols of success and elitism in popular media.
In this new body work, currently in production, Helen turns her focus to the notion of 'specimen', 'preservation', 'relic' and the craft of reliquary, and what this means in a contemporary context.
These new works encompass the artist's initial painting (oil on linen) of her subject, cutting out the image, and mounting it within a frame.
