“What I feel I am drawn to is a particular aspect or idea that has a certain stance to it. It could be how the light is falling on a wall or architectural detail, or possibly a particular arrangement of elements and shapes that afford me the chance to inject some inventiveness to a composition.
“At one level I paint the visible world, but the real goal is more to do with metaphor than truth and actuality.
“Regardless of what initially interests me, the aspects of where ‘it’ is, become irrelevant. I am really looking for a kind of universality like ‘where is this?’ and ‘what is this about?’; not in any mimetic sense, but more in the sense of the experience of the dream, or the imaginings of someone having experienced such a place”.
